At first - I sing & play background acoustic guitar (yep, brave words, I know ) )
And at second - what about starting with some cover first? Something easy, commonly known, Comfortably Numb or anything like that?

With a cover "the band" could practise recording, mixing and communicating. Then when the real thing comes lots of tears of frustation will hopefully be spared
