Re: What CD's Are you Playing Right Now? Top 5

been a while since I have done this but here goes...

for 2014...

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong - this band from Baltimore USA has a great funky sound and knows how to play the progressive also.

Cirrus Bay - The Search for Joy - This is such a wonderful band with very thoughtful lyrics and a female vocal that is just mesmerizing.

Major Parkinson - Twilight Cinema - not sure if this is progressive or a sound tracks but whatever the vocals are outstanding as is the music.

Darryl Way - Children of the Cosmos - Talk about a feel good CD, this is it with all the progressive melodies you would expect including a wonderful track that incorporates "Pacaellbel's Cannon".

Cosmograf - Capacitor - "Storing the Human spirit since 1745"

going back....

Times Up - Snow Queen - 2012
Unitopia - Artificial - 2010
Eclipse Sol-Air - Schizophillia - 2013
Crazy World - The Return of the Clown - 2012
Sebastian hardie - Four Moments - 1975

will try to do this more often!

Usually 3 were in for a month with rotation in the other slots. So in this vein:
What do you think of the new....Fill in the blank
What can't you stop playing?
What disc has held your interest for awhile?
Which Tracks knock you out?
And of course, What new CD's disappoint, good at first then forgotten later, and finally, what discs are just bad
So enter often! Tell us What you think updated for the years to come each time you get something new!!
well everyone seems to be doing a top 5 instead of sharc's 5 questions..

that goes to show that the Moonies are a nice group, and only answer the questions that don't cause controversy

Rick, I'm asking the Five discs your playing yourself, right now. The Questions are about those discs, good, bad or ugly. Give your opinion. These lists are to help me and all of us find out true reviews from people I consider experts.

Proghead2112- anything Wetton brings me to this week.........

John Wetton ,ARKANGEL. Ok , by now you know that I love this guys voice. This '98 release is typical Wetton Pop but has great production. Also Fripp and Hackett solo on 2 very good tunes. Finally I got this disc because spaz showed me this CD buying Link. http://www.half.ebay.com/. Having searched for this CD for years, there it was! Delivered in 1 week for a total of $6.50!!!!
I.M.H.O. Yesspaz rules again!!!

OUT OF MYSELF- Riverside. On the Great RICKTER SCALE this CD was Featured and I was Blown away, The rhythmic use of Guitar is very catchy. So far a very good CD.

To WOJTEK, say again? we know you mean to tell us something sincere
To poda, having read your list, will you run away with me? My wife will understand

What I'm playing right now isn't all CD's. Finally unpacked a whole slew of vinyl and am now torturing the kids with it.
Top five:
Iona.........anything Iona thanks to AM. I have finally completed purchasing all of their recordings.
Styx........taking the kids to see them Nov 10 for the two teens 15th and 16th birthdays...they like the music now lets see if they like 'em live. So am playing them often.
Spirit......Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus......brings me back to my teen years and all of the ...............never mind what all of the is.....just brings me back.
Beaver and Krause........Gandharva....something that if I ever figure out how to do it I want to get on to AM.
Finallly, the Moody Blues, Seventh Sojourn.........see Spirit for explaination.

Red face sorry i didn't get it right the first time

just starting a new book on the commute so i needed new backgrounds...trusty mp3 is playing:

philip glass - piano solos; found these all very haunting (cannot get them out my head), were played as music on BSG episode noticed it right away and had to have it...very pensive.

van der graaf generator - from Present cd2 what can i say, getting my Graaf on! while i love all of it these improves proof irresistable. also selections W, Arrow and Ship of fools from the I prophesy disaster cd...gotta have peter screeching in my ears.

tortoise - It's All Around You, though Crest is my favorite i find the other somewhat ambient, free form scapes are addictive...find myself humming some of the vocals when i least expect to.

zenpool - Kharmonics, some very soothing rythms, as well as, some powerfully moving selections just right for reading stories of Warrior-like invasions.carl does a great job on this celtic-like music. makes for a nice backdrop.

hey Jnite...ive got some Beaver & Kraust too, cant remember if i'd ever put them in the thread about new music

and sharc you had me laughing uncontrollably.

gonna keep this playlist for
anyway that's my current list and i'm listening to it.

Re: What CD's Are you Playing RIght Now? Top 5

What Dr. Dot is listening to when he isn't listening to the Moon:
  • Genesis - Foxtrot
For the longest time, I was a Collins era Genesis fan. Then someone grabbed me by the scruff of the neck, sat me down, and said "Shut up and listen." I haven't been the same since.
  • Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
One of the better Fish era Marillion discs, though I have to admit that I like ALL of the Fish era Marillion.
  • Dr. Dot's Musical Extravaganza - The Longs
My own personal compilation CD that I take out whenever I'm going to be doing some serious coding and need some serious coding music -- that music that puts me in the groove and tells everyone that disturbing me would be a good way of losing a finger or perhaps an entire arm. It includes such greats as Grendel (see a theme here?), The Great Nothing, Mundus Incompertus, and Mr Ten Percent. There'd be more, but that's all I could manage to cram on a CD.
  • Dr. Dot's musical extravaganza, The Shorts
This consists of shorter classics that give me the same mode that the longs do, only with shorter tracks. This includes Utopia Theme, Peter Gabriel's Blood of Eden and Biko (both of which get me right HERE<-, if'n ya know what I mean, and I think you do). The Bash by Dixie Dregs (that one still makes me dig out the ol' Rebel flag and start screaming for Yankee blood), A couple of the 7/8 tracks from Iluvatar's Children CD, Genesis' Driving the Last Spike and Domino (both Collins era Genesis that I categorically refuse to give up), Supper's Ready from Foxtrot, and Karn Evil #9, first movement (as they had intended, not hacked up) and Hocus Pocus by Focus.
  • The Tide Turns by Blezqi Zatsaz

Interesting that these 10+ and 20+ pieces are on the "shorts."

Fighting a valliant rear-guard action in a futile attempt to get and remain caught up, Dr. Dot replies from a post that is just short of a month old...

I noticed that too as I was putting it together. They're only short because my longs are all in the half hour plus range. Once I find a way of cramming 4 hours of MP3 on a single CD, I'm gonna be in good shape, since I'll only need two CDs for a full day's work with zero repetition.

Good news, though! With all the hard work I've been doing lately, I've been given my very own personal hard-walled office (with door that locks, thanks!).

I choose to believe that it's because of my hard work rather than my rather vocal exploration into the seedier neighborhoods of our shared language.

It's not really that hard. I've been about the task of making mp3 cds that are "The Complete...." works of an artist on one cd. For instance, ripped at 128k, I fit all nine Zeppelin albums, the Page & Plant album, and the two original cuts from the Page & Plant live album all on one disc. Title: The Complete Led Zeppelin. Ripped at 160k I've got A-Manhattan Project and Maraton-Z of Rush on two discs. The Complete Simon and Garfunkel ripped at 320k. The Complete Beatles at 160k.

Shouldn't be too hard. I'm using standard 700M/80 min. discs. All I'm going is figuring out what is the best quality I can rip an artist's complete catalog at and still be under 700M, then viola! I'm using Nero, btw.

Radio Mortis reports:

Salem Hill fight a hard battle with Kate Bush for CD of the year but with Glass Hammer still out in front, but will they hold out? Riverside and Djam karet look on from the sidelines after giving up.
