Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

True confession time. I've lived in the South most of my life, save a couple years as an infant across the seas in the land of Burgandy and Champagne, and 4 years in Siberycuse, NY at college.

Just yesterday I picked up my first recordings of Lynard Skynard, a best of collection. And I'm really enjoying it.

Come on folks - get those lighters out - FREE BIRD!!!! WHOOOO!

But also remember Gimme Three Steps, Sweet Home Alabama, Saturday Night Special, Honky Tonk Night Time Man, What's Your Name, One More Time. Just to name a few.

I was always an Allman and Dead fan and kind of poo pooed the skynard fans as too mainstream. They were the KISS of Southern Rock, if you will. But ya know, they could still rock.

But I think I'll slip into some Captain Beyond to cleanse myself (mostly recorded in Macon, Georgia - home of Capricorn Records.)

There's a great line in Night at the Museum where Ben Stiller is breaking up the fight between the civil war figurines and tries to console the South by saying You guys got the Allman's!. So very true.

I was always impressed by how mythic Skynard was on Long Island. Never really understood it myself but you couldn't miss it.

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

Never thought of that stuff as guilty pleasures...just good rock. I esp like "That Smell". Very well written song and I always crank it...

Molly Hatchet's first record is a classic. Somewhere, maybe on this thread, Jim has said he likes that one too...

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

I grew up in th south and Hatchet, Skynard, Charlie Daniels, and Marshal Tucker were played to death. Though I still am a Marshal Tucker fan.

Ohhh, guilty, back around 77/78 I was a big REO Speedwagon fan. 'You Get What You Play For' was a great driving around, drinking beer 8-track. I got over them after the HiInfidelity in college, mainly sticking with Zep, Yes, ELP, Grateful Dead, Allman's as well as others.

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

I second that. You should be guilt free. But then again, we don't know what you do while you listen to her.

But if you like Imogen you should check out Charlotte Martin http://www.charlottemartin.com/ or http://www.myspace.com/charlottemartin (love the calendar speaking of guilty pleasures).

The newest is covers, but other stuff is all her's. Try Stromata.

Re: Guilty Pleasures!!!!!

Let's see....

Frank, Dean, Sammy (the rat pack)

The Monkees (They were the bomb to me at 7 yrs.)
Goo Goo Dolls
Smithereens (Kings of The 3 minute song...they rock!)
Boston
Meatloaf (for the Todd R. influence ... yea, right)
Gin Blossoms
Elton John (circa 1970-1977)

Wow, I'm having an epiphany!

Saw the Smithereens (for maybe the 15th time) two weeks ago. They STILL rock.

Elton John 1970-1977 is NOT a guilty pleasure. It's the best.

The Gin Blossoms first (only?) album was excellent and I would add the rest to my list too. However they would HAVE to go below Barry Manilow....still love old Bazza.
