Show 133 - Moon Royalty

Airing Sunday June 10 from 8-11 PM EST & Monday June 11 from 1-4 PM EST

Back to the full-length feature shows, this one highlighting one of the truly greats, Queen.

Almost every record from "Queen I" to "The Miracle" is represented, with the unparalled "A Day At The Races" with the most entries. For the most part, I've backloaded the show, putting my personal favorites at the end. Once you hear "Bohemian Rhaposody", that's when the run starts, and you'll get an idea of which ones I like the most.

There's a lot of good ones omitted, but that's the breaks with such a great band. Enjoy, as the Moon library is scattered, with only 30-40 songs.

Your key:

Queen I (I)
Queen II (II)
Sheer Heart Attack (SHA)
A Night At The Opera (O)
A Day At The Races (TR )
News Of The World (N)
Jazz (J)
The Game (TG)
The Miracle (M)

The songs:

Keep Yourself Alive (I)
Doing All Right (I)
I Want It All (M)
'39 (O)
Play The Game (TG)
Great King Rat (I)
Sheer Heart Attack (N)
All Dead, All Dead (N)
Stone Cold Crazy/Misfire/Bring Back Leroy Brown (SHA)
Some Day One Day (II)
The Millionaire Waltz (TR )
You And I (TR )
Dead On Time (J)
Dragon Attack (TG)
Jealousy (J)
Tenement Funster (SHA)
Flick Of The Wrist (SHA)
You're My Best Friend (O)
Liar (I)
The Miracle (M)
Sail Away Sweet Sister (TG)
Tie Your Mother Down (TR )
You Take My Breath Away (TR )
Get Down, Make Love (N)
Love Of My Life (O)
Bohemian Rhapsody (O)
Ogre Battle (II)
Save Me (TG)
Spread Your Wings (N)
Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To.....) (O)
Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon (O)
Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy (TR )
Procession /Father To Son (II)
White Queen (As It Began) (II)
Don't Stop Me Now (J)
It's Late (N)
Mustapha (J)
Long Away (TR )
March Of The Black Queen (II)
Somebody To Love (TR )

I decided not to present the songs chronologically - I wanted to match contrasting styles and moods to play off against each other.

Join me in genuflection this week!

Since it's two days, I'll be the Queen the first day and then Giant for A Day the next!

Re: Show 133 - Moon Royalty

Thanks as always for the feedback. I'm going to be less frequent in shout, so let's try to keep the conversation about the content here, so I'm able to process it.

A lot of requests have been already covered. I'll read a suggestion, and invariably I'll say "oh yeah I played that etc.....". Take a look back through the threads and see if there is a show or concept that you would like repeated. I've missed a few weeks in 2+ years, but have not yet repeated a show. I don't expect to repeat any, unless it's a request.

I will continue to play variety, and concentrate on newer releases and highlight selected artists. I've found that it helps introduce an artist to a whole new audience. With a wide base of content comes differing opinions. I am a bit different in that i like a lot of music. Of course I have personal favorites, but music is a spectrum with many shades.

Again, let me know of any ideas. One final thing - there will be a show soon featuring Steely Dan. I've got many a call for this, including Jim, who has supplied some content. One thing I will not do anymore is debate the "progginess" of the selections. It's a tired and pointless exercise. Example..."San Tropez" is not prog. But if I'm playing Meddle, I'm not excluding it.

I figured it's been awhile since I stated the concept of the show (to entertain).....and with my lesser involvement in the black box, a necessity.

Thanks as always for listening and the support.

If you need any Steely Dan material, let me know I have all their stuff.

Re: Show 133 - Moon Royalty

I've enjoyed each of your shows, Rick. Always interesting. Keep up the good work! I like VAX's suggestion to feature new music, but I also like that you tie old and new together. I'm still discovering some of the 'old' stuff I missed in the 80s and 90s. It;s good to hear several eras of some artist to get a good idea about whether to invest in expanding my personal collection.
Prog-ness aside, (you're right, it's a pointless argument), your shows always feature Rock-ness! Oh no, please do not let it be known I've started another pointless debate...

Exactly. Personally, I get frustrated that some bands I've missed because I can't get a handle on their output. Glad to see that you're getting something out of it, dino.

I'm no code-writer, but there should be a way to write a little script that would pull music based on date (added? released?) and throw together a show?

My most humble apologies.

But I do like a lively discussion.

Re: Show 133 - Moon Royalty

In the end, if there is some music on AM that you don't like, just take the headphones off or turn the sound down. No need to get snippy. I made a comment that Rick probably didn't like on Shout during the Queen show, regarding Queen not being a prog band. As a former DJ who had a prog radio show in the 1970's, I know that you need the freedom to play what you see fit, or we are not going to have a good prog rock station, such as AM. Without getting into the relative progressive-ness of bands such as Queen, Rush, Styx, ELO, and the like, some of us are disappointed when the time we have to tune in to AM is used on such marginally progressive acts. But its no reason to get militant or angry and piss each other off. Don't like it, turn it off. Go find one of your 2,000 CDs and play it until the stuff you don't like passes.

Actually I don't mind the comments. I just don't like to trot out the same arguments. It always seems that examples of Prog are bands that really aren't sometimes. Tull and Rush are my favorite bands but I'm hard-pressed to call them pure prog. Same with Queen.

I've played Sabbath, Styx, etc.....always with caveats.

My favorite prog debate is the exclusion of metal. Maiden is as prog as it comes.

Didn't you make the Bay City comment, Colo, or was that someone else? that was pretty funny, I didn't respond because I had to log out. Rarely do show comments make me upset.

An EXCELLENT point about having limited time to tune in and hearing something you don't like. All I can do is post the show in advance. Almost always you'll see it up the Wed prior to the show. It's early, but convenient for me. Another thing I want to do less is the featured artists. A CD of a band is great, but three hours seems to be a lot. I'll keep that in mind.

I will be spotlighting some marginal bands in the future. I want to get to BOC, Elton, and maybe one or two others. But most of it will be Moon material.

Great post.

Yes, that was me who made the Bay City Rollers comment. Keep up the good work, Rick.

Re: Show 133 - Moon Royalty

Folks, thanks for the comments. I'm closing this thread because it's incomplete and no longer reads linerally. I've reposted on my introductory thread for reference, and next week's show is up already.

Thanks!
