Great Idea!

I love the idea of "Lost, hidden and Rare tracks" because it will give us a chance to hear even MORE from our favourite bands that we might never know existed.

As a starter. I know there are a lot of Jethro Tull fans out there on AM.

Prior to the release of "A Passion Play", Tull were in the studio in France at the Chateau D'Herouville recording the follow up to "Thick as a Brick". Due to a combination of Ill-Health, Technical and Production problems and the bands sudden decision to return to the UK from Tax exile, the recordings were never finished. Rather than continue with these pieces they started recording "A Passion Play" and the Chateau recordings went into Tull folk-lore as the "Chateau D'Isaster Tapes".

These recordings were finally made available on the double compilation album "Nightcap" and listening to them you can hear where a lot of the themes which appeared on "A Passion Play" came from.

The second CD of the set contains a lot more Unreleased and Rare tracks.

For me, stand out tracks on the Chateau Tapes are, Look at the Animals and the 3 parter-Scenario, Audition and No Rehearsal.

Die Hard Tull fans will probably have these in their collections but they may be of interest to others who are not "Completists".

My roommate in college played that Zappa tune with GFR - but I can't remember what it was! Was it off Zoot Allures (sp?). Please enlighten me! It's been 19 years - god, am I old!

I have the Jan Akkerman "The Noise of Art " - superb! Doesn't he have others?

How about some Finch? Any band with a bass player named "Beer Klaasse" can't be all bad!

The thing that separates "Nightcap" from other compilations is that the music is high quality and not just filler.

Actually, that wasn't a Zappa tune with GFR, it was a GFR tune with Zappa! He produced their 1976 album "Good Singin' Good Playin'" and he plays a solo on the song you heard, which is called 'Out To Get You'.

I have The Noise of Art too. Jan Akkerman has tons of solo material dating back to 1972, everything from lute music to blues to jazz to pop.

Never heard of Finch...I'll investigate. Beer the Bassist, eh?

Finch's two best are "Glory of the Inner Force" and "Galleons of Passion" - both are mid-70's and have very long all-instrumental tracks. I believe they are Swedish or Norwegian. World-class guitar.

Another interesting band of that era was "Birth Control". They have a song about lying in a hammock (I am not making this up).

We have Finch "Glory Of The Inner Force" and "Beyond Expression" on AM's playlist. Both are excellent, with "Glory..." being slightly more progressive in my opinion. I'm pretty sure they are Dutch.

That would make sense - I do remember listening to Finch and Focus in tandem.

Any luck on Birth Control? They are from that same area of Europe, I think.

I thought Finch was a household name in prog - but it's funny how these things work - I had never heard of Nektar until Nearfest last year.
