Former Prog..and at times still Prog..Styx

Not a big deal but taking my 14 and 15 year olds to see them for the first time.... birthday presents from Dad...right in front so they can see what I consider "real music" up close.:)

Styx was one of the big bands when I came of musical age in high school. The Grand Illusion had just come out, and Equinox and Crystal Ball weren't that far back. Everything through Paradise Theater was good.

I always thought the push and pull between James Young and the other band members was the thing. He is such a rock and roller, and it made for great music.

When they struggled with updating their sound, like every other great band in the 70's did, they were ridiculed by many. They got a bad rap in total for the crap they put out later. They were despised by the pop crowd for being prog, and vice versa.

Then I went back in college and listened to their first four records. They're smoking. When I saw them about four years back, it all came together. The replacement keyboardist/singer is excellent.

Way to go jn, I hope they appreciate it. :cool:

Styx was the first concert I ever saw. Sioux City. $5. just before the release of Grand Illusion, so they were still playing all the great Crystal Ball tracks, and then favored us with new stuff. I was probably 13 years old, and didn't understand the funny smell in the air and all the lighters. a few more years before I figured out what "Light Up" was all about...

jn, you will not be disappointed. I first saw Styx on the Crystal Ball tour, opening for Kansas in 1977. I've lost count of how many times I've seen them (probably over 20) and have enjoyed them every time. They continue to play with a tremendous amount of energy and love for their fans. Watch their drummer, he's an amazing powerhouse. Yes, at times they miss Dennis DeYoung, but you don't have to hear all the sappy ballads now. They rock. I won't give away any surprises (unless you want me too).

I have seen Styx at least a dozen times. Never been disappointed in any of the shows. Your right Stan, they still have tremendous energy and still sound great. I haven't seen the latest line up with Ricky Phillips but have heard that he fits in just great. I know that they are playing some of the covers from their most recent release and again have heard they sound great. I'm really looking forward to the show and seeing how my kids react to the music. They like listening to them at home now lets see it live. They liked Journey so I feel that they will love Styx.:D

Not as much as we've missed you Stan.............goes for Artemis too. How are you both?

I don't want to take over jn's thread, but suffice to say you should see more of both of us in the future. We've endured a summer of (good) changes, and are anxious to reunite with our moon friends. :cool: :)
