Subway to Sally

anybody heard of this band?

Subway to Sally

pretty interesting blend of instruments. they have some Real Player videos to listen to... moon material, I think.

Ouch

since I would never want to offend anyone or criticize their taste, let's just say that we think very differently about this band. definitely NOT Moon material to my ears...

roger 06-24-2005 06:39 PM

well, the videos I listened to were their earlier stuff, I think you're right about their later material.

You know, Roger, I'm not one to criticize one's taste in music either (with the exception of this ... thing that Jim here has for Bob Dylan and his alleged singing...but that's a topic of another discussion), I'm going to have to agree with Jim on this one. I listened to everything they had available, and, the fact that they DO have interesting instrumentation involved not withstanding, the fact that they have an Oboe does NOT make it prog anymore than the Supermen of the 1980s punk rock scene (and their three superman-clad bassoon players).

Yes. Three guys, dressed as Superman. Jumping around and playing bassoon. In a punk band. Kinda like Monty Python's P. T. Gumby meets The Sex Pistols.

that's cool, Rog. one of songs that I listened to was a video of Liebeszauber. I guess I've heard less proggy things on the moon, but maybe that was just Rick's latest show... :D

I heard that one myself. Maybe I'm just getting old. I've also heard less proggy things on the moon, again on shows (and I'm not going to single out Rick, since about the only person who has a show and hasn't played something that I wouldn't consider proggy was Avian).

That's cause he's only done a few shows:) I'm sure if there were more it would fall out of that tight-ass definition there is of prog.

No problem, Vermont Roger. I didn't know I had Knickers!:D

By the way, last night I heard the After Crying's "Show" CD from 2003. I was unimpressed by them at Nearfest, but that CD (2 yrs after the 2001 NF show) is really neat. Classical, jazz, prog (lots), even rap. It's fascinating. If you stick with it, it's very prog. If you don't, well it's an opportunity lost.

I haven't heard the CD Roger mentions, but it seems to me just saying it's not Moon material is enough. I've heard plenty of stuff on here that's "marginally prog".

Maybe Roger's band really isn't Moon material, but I'd like to hear more suggestions from him in the future. I generally like his taste and it seems a bit over the top to say these things about the band.

I just hope you don't stop suggesting stuff because this one's not good enough.

What does make it prog then? I like 99% of your posts RL, they make my day. But with all due respect, I find that statement indefensible. But damn funny :D

I'm glad you find the statement indefensible but funny, because that's how I intended it to be.

The biggest problem with this one in regards to the moon (at least with the tracks I heard) was that it was much more heavy toward the KrautPunk genre which, by it's very definition, is non-prog.

The definition, of course, comes from the KrautPunk enthusiasts, and not me.

well, I listened to a couple of tunes, thought they did some interesting stuff, instrumentally, and some time sign things, and thought, hey, this is proggy in a heavy sort of way, and just wondered if anyone else had ever heard them. I'm quite sure that their entire oeuvre is not moon, but like I said, I've heard tunes on the moon that were less prog.
I don't own any of their cds, and probably never will, but there it is.

smiles all around... :D

Wow, we connected there! A banner day indeed!

Good point about the Kraut Punk thing..it's crystallizing now....
