Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Greeting Mooniverseians.
This week starts off our 2nd year of broadcast with a look at the core of the playlists I ask you to build. We are going to delve into the history of the Progressive Rock Concept Album. (Please note that's "Progressive Rock"). This show is going to feature the very 1st Progressive Rock album and parts of the other albums of the time up for condieration. Then I'll toss in a salute to the Epic Tracks - a mainstay of progressive music. NOW - here's what I'd like you to do. Here in this thread I want to compile a list of what are considered Prog Concept Albums. I'm going to give you a few of the ones that we've already played and I'd like you to fill in the blanks. To do so you will need to use the "edit button" in this thread. You should have 4 buttons on the bottom right side of each thread posting, one of which is 'edit'. Click the one for the window you want to edit in the thread and add you titles, then save your results. Now, I may be incorrect and not all members have this nifty tool. If not, merely add a new reply including the albums you suggest and I will transfer them into the list. So, list away and have fun. Please list ARTIST, ALBUM, YEAR OF RELEASE. Thanks - see you on the corner. Dale |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
I guess since I'm so special (or odd, depending on your point of view) as an admin I can edit. So......
Just use your reply to add new entries and I'll move them over. NO NEED TO COPY AND PASTE - wasted bytes and bits, and takes too ong to scroll thru. Thanks folks - have fun. Quote:

Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Does a whole side of an album count as a concept? If not, at least they're epics.
In that category we have: MacDonald and Giles - Birdland - 1971 Nektar - Recycled -1976 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells - 1973 Renaissance - Scheherezade & Other Stories (sorry Gooze) - 1975 ELP - Tarkus - 1971 Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda da Vida (proto prog) - 1968 and of course Yes - Close to the Edge - 1972 Full length concept album: Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - 2002 Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed - 1967 Bo Hansen - Lord of the Rings -1972 Camel - Snow Goose - 1975 Harmonium - Si on Avait Besoin d'une Cinquieme Saison - 1975 The Who - Tommy (proggy in my universe) - 1969 Happy Turkey Day (Thanksgiving in Canada only), and remember to thank Bob for prog Good additions , but sorry, a side's worth of music is an epic and not a concept album. Tubular Bells is more a 12" single, no real story there (which is the heart of a concept album). Thanks for adding. |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Well Toby I can understand you being a Dentist and all, that you would pick that Renaissance Cd.:bang!: It is a great one to pull teeth to. :notsure: (While heavily Sedated) lol.:-V

Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Hi Dale! The most obvious one I don't see listed is: 1) Pink Floyd's-Animals-1977 based on Roger Water's interpretation of George Orwell's Animal Farm.:eureka: 2) Is actually a 3 Cd concept, The Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy of Planet Gong's Pothead Pixies flying around in there Flying teapots and with the help of the Octave doctors bringing there listeners to a new consciousness. (Or in my case Unconsciousness from too many bong hits 8-q .) Later in the following discs you get the characters from planet gong introduced and finally in the 3rd disc you have it all come together in a cosmic revealing of your own self awareness. The discs are: GONG-Flying Teapot-1973, GONG-Angels Egg-1973, and GONG-You-1974. In that order  3) CAMEL-Nude-1981. This story of a WWII Japanese soldier who was forgotten on a Pacific Island for 20 years, unaware the war was over. :bang!: 4) SAGA-The Chapters Live-2005. Saga finally puts the chapters in order and performs them live. This deserves it's own show, don't you think? 5) How to make a Burger is covered by: FOCUS-Hamburger Concierto-1974 Taken from a Brahms piece. I'll take mine Medium Well. With a cold one of course. :salute :rawk:

Both are great stories in and of themselves. Those here from the US should pay careful attention to and heed Orwell's warnings of Animal Farm in correlation with the current US federal administration. ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL; SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS. |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Alright gang - how could we get this far into the thread and not have picked up the Pink Floyds "The Wall" (1979) was not lisited. Also Floyds "The Final Cut" (1983) even though it was pretty much a bad Roger Waters self indulgence and not much of a Floyd cd, IMHO.
Also: Alan Parsons Project "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" (1976) Dream Theater "Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes from a Memory" (1999) Genesis "Duke" (1980) (Not sure if this one really qualifies but I'm throwing it in the mix.) Jethro Tull "Thick as a Brick" (1972) Yes "Tales from Topographic Oceans" (1973) Marillion "Missplaced Childhood" (1985) Triumvirat "Pompeii" (1977) Styx "Kilroy was Here" (1983) (Is this really prog?) That's all I can think of at the moment. Prog On! Diff_Drummer |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Frank Zappa's 1966 Freak Out album is considered by some to be one of, if not "the", 1st prog concept albums. Of course all FZ's records could be considered concept albums since they were all part of his Project/Object concept, to wit:
http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/wiki/P...Object_concept For concept albums in general, here's some food for thought: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept_album |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
just adding a few as they pop into my head:
i think pretty much all of robert calverts: capt lockhead and the starfighters lucky leif and the longships hype: the songs of tom mahler freq test tube conceived mike oldfield: incantations ommadawn hergest ridge eloy: power and the passion dawn ocean manuel gottsching: E2 - E4 phillip glass: (prog??? probably not, but we have some on the moon, so...) Einstein on the Beach Koyaniskaatsi (sp?) laurie anderson: United States, Parts 1 thru 4 Pater Hammill: The fall of the House of Usher Klaus Schulze: Dune and, probably a ton others |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Hi Peeps,
I'm going to go out on a bit of a limb here. Hawkwind - Space Ritual Alive - 1973 "The Space Ritual show attempted to create a full audio-visual-cerebral experience, representing themes developed by Barney Bubbles and Robert Calvert entwining the fantasy of Starfarers in suspended animation traveling through time and space with the concept of the music of the spheres." Now THAT'S a concept!! When we lucky few, sorry Mortis, who went to one of the shows entered the theatre we were handed a fold up sheet with photos and text, written by Barney Bubbles, that outlined the story. I have to say it was a sonic experience I will never forget........neither will those who came to my 50th Birthday party and witnessed a rather drunken Keithie and Steve moshing to Brainstorm, totally embarrassing TLS Pam who was hiding under a table. Anyway...that's my 2 pees worth. |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
:eureka: Hey that reminds me! Hawkwind's "Warriors on the Edge of Time" 1975, with Sci Fi Writer Michael Moorcocks (no jokes please) poetic narrative is probably their finest studio recording. Space Rock at it's best! Joe Bob sez "Check it Out" :rawk:

Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Correction to the above. My copy is a 1993. It's actually a 1975 DOH!

Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Adding to the thread:
- Aphrodite's child - 666 (1972) - The Box - Black Dog There (2005) - The Box - Le Horla de Maupassant (2009) - Jack Lancaster and Robin Lumley - Marscape (1976) - PFM - Dracula (2006) - Various - Peter and the Wolf (1975) - Various - Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) (not sure this fits, but I think it could be considered progressive) I'll probably think of more later, but that's it for now. |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
I vote the California 99 I sent you, or the Mandalaband; Eye of Wendor.
I can think of more, but i will start with these! |
Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53

Re: Ode to the Concept Album - Mooniverse Show #53
Hi there Dale, my contribution:
Magma is pretty much a concept band. Beyond MDK you may also consider: Köhntarkösz - 1974 Ẁurdah Ïtah - 1974 K.A. - 2004 Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré - 2009 Ẁurdah Ïtah and MDK are movements 2 and 3 of a larger set called Theusz Hamtaahk. The first movement was never recorded. There are 2 concept albums by Hawkwind based on Michael Morcocks's writings: Warrior on the Edge of Time - 1974 The Chronicle of the Black Sword - 1985 Though the last one may not qualify as prog... And speaking of Hawkwind: Robert Calvert - Dr. Lockheed and the Starfighters - 1974 The first two LP by Area are concept albuns: Arbeit Macht Frei - 1973 Caution Radiation Area - 1974 More from Italy: Museo Rosenbach - Zarathrusta - 1973 Blocco Mentale - POA - 1973 Within Krautrock I only know nof this strange effort: German Oak - German Oak - 1972 But there's more from Germany: Eloy - Dawn - 1976 Eloy - Ocean - 1977 Eloy - Colours - 1980 Eloy - Planets - 1981 Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple - 1973 Triumvirat - Spartacus - 1975 José Cid made two concept albums, of which only one became globally notorious: Cantamos Pessoas Vivas - 1975 10 000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus e Marte - 1978 That's all I can remember for now. |

Seems a shame to take information born of the moon to another site. Why not create the db here? Once some info is compiled, it could be driven by a web form for querying.
